Romantic goths

It's interesting to wonder why the gothic became so intertwined with the Romantic (with a capital R). I suppose that the closest we come is the way in which that Romantic house-party inspired two Gothic masterpieces, but did they write their spooky stories because it was raining outside and that's a traditional kind of story to try in those conditions, or because something in that rather (at that time) trashy genre deeply appealed to them?

The connections between the gothic landscape and the Romantic landscape make me wonder if the Romantics ween't trying to somehow elevate the genre--linking it not just to feelings of terror, but emphasising the sublime element. Read Shelley's 'Mont Blanc', and compare it to Frankenstein--you can see the connections really easily.
